This was a challenging piece to do because EVERYTHING IN IT IS SO TINY! (Sorry for yelling but there's no way for me to shrink the font for a visual reference to size so I went the other way ;) ) I used an airbrusher's technique of scratching the paint to heighten the illusion of texture. Check out the close ups! It worked really well :)
I had to sit down and think hard about what this piece was going to depict. Again, this is a Marvel comic with specific characters and I don't like reworking other peoples' intellectual property...at least, not often.
I was also watching a lot of Sword Art Online, an RPG animation with swords and magic. One of the main themes of the show is consistent, overwhelming odds but our young hero, Kirito, still emerges victorious.
I wanted to reflect something similar so in this scene we see four intrepid wizards and warriors standing in defense of a magic mushroom patch while a massive, hulking werewolf / chimera creeps over the top of their defenses ready to strike! Who will win? Only time will tell!
This original artwork is painted on "The Fearless Defenders" #1 by Marvel comics and is created with airbrushed acrylics and watercolour pencils.
